Importance of Understanding Your Cholesterol level

For many reasons, it is very important that one understand their cholesterol level. One of the most important reasons would be by having high cholesterol level would cause you to be more prone to heart attacks and strokes. But it does not mean that if one is not obese, your cholesterol level is proper even though overweight is one of the most obvious reasons or symptoms to high cholesterol.

Understanding One's Cholesterol level

To learn and understand one's cholesterol level, there are many things to take into considerations, for example the fact that there are good (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL).

Cholesterol level can be classified into 3 categories: desirable, borderline risk, or high risk.

Desirable - Total cholesterol less than 200mg/dL - Risk of hear attack relatively low, unless you have other risk factors involved

Borderline Risk - Total cholesterol between 200 and 239mg/dL - One third of all people fall in this category - Cholesterol level should be check at least once a year, especially when one's HDL is less than 40mg/dL and/or one don't have other risk factors for heart disease

High Risk - Total cholesterol more than 240mg/dL - Risk of heart attack and stroke extremely increased, twice the risk of other coronary problems hence must take note of situation seriously

The main point to remember here is that the lower the LDL cholesterol, the lower the total cholesterol will be. One should take all possible measures to keep your LDL cholesterol as low as possible. Through these measures, if you are still not able to lower the cholesterol level then medications may be prescribed to help you in the process.
